This four-day class includes a comprehensive study of science and technology used to accurately assess building characteristics, including energy efficiency, combustion safety, moisture, comfort, health and indoor air quality. A critical evaluation of “whole-house” dynamics is featured. Combustion (appliance) safety, building ventilation, carbon monoxide and gas leak detection are highlighted. Combustion appliance types and classifications are explained. We evaluate home performance improvements based on cost-benefit analysis of the immediate and long-term impact of each. We provide instruction on tools used to measure indices of home performance including blower door, combustion analyzer, manometer, gas sniffer, and CO detector. We will spend the first three days of the training in the classroom with PowerPoint presentations and hands-on time with our props and testing equipment. We will spend the fourth day of the training at a house, where students will gain real-world, hands-on experience. BPI testing will take place on Day 5, including two hours of written testing and two hours of field testing.
